Sabka apna-apna normal hai”: STORIES THAT HEAL, ENCOURAGE AND BRING HAPPINESS

Aadyantara and NRF’s Storytelling Initiative for Children with Special Needs. A celebration of empathy, art, and global community

In a world constantly racing forward, every individual deserves a moment to pause and return to their own rhythm—a reset aligned to their pace, a return to their normal.

With this belief at its core, Aadyantara launched a unique Storytelling Initiative for children with autism under the care of the Neuroaid and Research Foundation (NRF). Anchored in NRF’s vision of using storytelling to spread warmth and connection, this collaboration sought to create a space where every child feels seen, heard, and valued through the evocative power of stories.

A Collaborative Journey of One and a Half Months

In June this year, Aadyantara reached out to its global network of artists, writers, and well-wishers, inviting them to volunteer for this initiative. Recognizing the unique needs of children with special needs, a thoughtful and structured selection process was put in place.

  • 27 volunteers expressed their interest.
  • A two-round audition process was conducted, with detailed feedback shared after each round.
  • 12 storytellers were eventually selected—each chosen for their voice, narrative style, and emotional expression.

This rigorous process, jointly led by Team Aadyantara and Team NRF, highlighted not just talent—but the immense compassion and commitment of the volunteers. Many storytellers, including writers, even offered to contribute their own stories or visit the centre in person to narrate to the children. Such gestures reflected the genuine warmth behind each recorded voice.

Crafting Stories With Care

Once selected, volunteers were assigned curated stories by the NRF team, tailored to their individual narration profiles. Aadyantara facilitated the entire process—from onboarding volunteers, guiding them through technical and narrative nuances, and coordinating re-recordings—to ensuring timely completion.

What stood out was the dedication of the storytellers. They recorded late at night after work, during vacations, and even while travelling across continents. Despite fatigue or competing schedules, the motivation to bring a smile to a child’s face overshadowed every challenge.

Global Voices, Unified Purpose

The initiative saw overwhelming support:

  • Volunteers joined from 4 Indian states and 3 countries—India, the USA, and the UK.
  • Contributors included students, entrepreneurs, marketing professionals, theatre artists, engineers, and academicians.
  • Remarkably, 15+ volunteers were first-time storytellers, who embraced the learning curve with remarkable enthusiasm.

The diversity of participants embodied the spirit of community—demonstrating that when the cause is meaningful, art becomes a universal language.

Art as Therapy, Art as Connection

This initiative reaffirmed a fundamental truth: art heals.

Storytelling became more than an activity—it became a medium of comfort, joy, expression, and connection. It bridged geographies, professions, and life experiences. It soothed minds and strengthened bonds. It also echoed Aadyantara’s mission of integrating arts into everyday life, reminding us that art is not exclusive; it belongs to everyone.

A Meaningful Culmination at Purple Fest, Goa

The final audio book was released on 9th October at Purple Fest, Goa by NRF. For many storytellers, this was not the end—it was a beginning. Numerous volunteers have since reached out to Aadyantara, seeking more opportunities to contribute their art and voice to similar impact-driven initiatives.

Aadyantara is humbled by this response. The initiative has not only impacted children at NRF but also created an inspiring global community of empathetic storytellers.

Closing Note

The Aadyantara–NRF Storytelling Initiative stands as a testament to what is possible when compassion meets creativity. It reminds us that art, when woven with intention, becomes a transformative force—one that touches lives, nurtures minds, and builds bridges across differences.

And above all, it reinforces a powerful message: very child deserves to be seen. Every voice can make a difference. Every story has the power to heal.
